Each year, I choose a word for the year to set the tone and guide my decisions throughout the year. The process of picking the word can be just as fun as implementing the word.

5 tips for choosing a word for the year

Consider the energy of the last year

What do you want to bring into this year? What new energy do you want to manifest this year?

Look back at your previous years’ words

How did it work out? What can you learn from it?

Use brainstorming tools

Online dictionary and thesaurus. Name generators (I can share links for the ones I use)

Write your ideas on a piece of paper

The act of writing down words, circling, crossing out sparks ideas. The word starts to reveal itself.

Think about it for a day or two

See what feels right. It’s OK if some years’ words take longer than others (which was my experience this year) Ask others for feedback if you feel comfortable (I keep it to myself until I decide so others’ opinions do not sway me!)

Steps to take after you’ve picked your word

  • Start applying your word
  • Add it to your goal tracker (tip: I add it as a header in my Notion Goals doc)
  • Consider the word when making goals
  • Use the word to guide decisions
  • One of my favorites: Apply it to the monthly themes in your content calendar

And make sure to keep a copy of your list. It’s a good inspiration for future word ideas.
